She was an Arab noblewoman during the Umayyad Dynasty, and the granddaughter of the fourth caliph, Ali. She was the daughter of Hussein, and her mother, Rabab, was from a distinguished family, descended from the great poet Imru al-Qais. She was both cultured and beautiful, and married as many as ten notable people in her lifetime. The mansions she built in Mecca and Medina became salons for the upper and cultured classes, to the point that some pilgrims would visit her mansions primarily for the sake of their style rather than the Kaaba. She also pioneered new fashions in clothing and hairstyles, which came to be known as the Sukaina style and took the world by storm. [Horiuchi Masaru]
