A specialized newspaper. A newspaper that reports on sports and provides related information. France's L'Equipe (first published in 1944) is famous as a comprehensive daily sports newspaper. Other European countries also have daily sports newspapers, but not in the United States or the United Kingdom. In all of these countries, there are many specialized newspapers for each sport that are published weekly or less frequently. In contrast, Japanese daily sports newspapers were founded and developed after World War II as a unique format that covers professional sports, entertainment, leisure, gambling, and entertainment reading material. Many are published as an affiliated business of major general daily newspaper companies. Due to the intensifying sales competition between these parent newspaper companies, there has been a recent increase in the number of sports newspapers being founded and published locally.
