He established his reputation as a lithographer in a style similar to that of Nicolas Toussaint Charlet (1792-1845), Charles-Joseph Traviès (1804-59), and Achille Deveria (1805-59), working on the satirical magazines Caricature and Charivari, edited by Charles Philipon (1804-62), who likened Louis Philippe to a pear. His turning point came with Gargantua (1830), which portrayed the pear-shaped king as a greedy giant, for which he was imprisoned for six months and fined. …
