Artificial reef - artificial reef

This refers to raised areas created by sinking various materials into the seabed for the purpose of creating habitats for aquatic organisms. This was done with the aim of promoting the growth of fish by artificially creating fish reefs (also called reef structures) by sinking natural stones, abandoned ships, concrete blocks, and other materials into the unproductive sandy and muddy seabed, focusing on the tendency of fish to gather around natural reefs such as banks and reefs that rise from the seabed.

水生生物の生育場所をつくる目的で、各種の資材を海底に沈めてつくった隆起部をいう。これは、海底から隆起した堆(たい)や岩礁などの天然礁に魚が集まる性質に着目し、生産性の低い砂泥質の海底に、自然石、廃船やコンクリートブロック、その他の資材を沈めて人工的に魚礁をつくり（築磯(つきいそ)ともいう）魚介類の生育を図ることを目的としたものである。
