...This movement was deeply connected to the ethnic identity of the Turkish people and was supported by young people such as students and workers. The other was the National Order Party (founded in 1970) led by Necmettin Erbakan (former professor at Istanbul Technical University), which linked itself to the Islamic revival movement Nurci, which gained momentum in the 1950s and 1960s, and aimed to establish an Islamic theocratic state. Its support base was peasants, lower-class urbanites, religious figures, and conservative students.
