Sagiryu

Japanese:
Sagiryu
〘Name〙 One of the Kyogen schools. There are various theories about the name Sagi, but according to "Warambegusa" written by Okura Toraakira in the early Edo period, it is said to be based on the nickname given to the father of Sagi Niuemon Sogen, who served Tokugawa Ieyasu and built the foundations of the Sagi school, because he was born with a long neck and lived near water. Sogen became a member of the Kanze troupe at the command of Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1614 ( Keicho 19 ), and established the school. The quality of the performance was flashy and aimed to appeal to the masses, and it flourished in the Edo period, but after the Meiji Restoration, when Noh was in decline, the 19th head of the school, Gonnojo, left Kyoto, and his disciples joined Azuma Noh Kyogen and were isolated from the Noh world, or moved to other schools, and the school was abolished in the Taisho period. ※Angura Nabe (1871-72)〈Kanagaki Robun〉 2 “The kyogen is of the Sagiri school, and the fact that he is the direct brother of Hekosai Niemon is well-known around here.”
