A French trading company active mainly in French-speaking West Africa. Abbreviated as CFAO. Founded in 1887, it took over from Cie. du Sénégal, which was established in 1881 to take over the trading rights of C.A. Verminck of Marseille, which had been engaged in West African trade since the 1840s. In West Africa, where there were few European settlers and, with a few exceptions, there were few mineral resources to develop, the activities of colonial capital were limited to the distribution stage, where they purchased tropical products such as groundnuts, palm, coffee, and cacao produced by Africans and sold European industrial products in return, but general trading companies like this company were at the core of such commercial activities.

フランス語圏西アフリカを中心に活動しているフランスの商社。略称CFAO。1840年代から西アフリカ貿易に従事していたマルセイユのベルマンクC.A.Verminck社の商権を継承して81年に設立されたセネガル会社Cie.du Sénégalを引き継ぎ，87年に設立された。ヨーロッパ人の入植者が少なく，一部の例外を除いて開発すべき鉱物資源も乏しかった西アフリカにおいては，植民地資本の活動はアフリカ人が生産するラッカセイ，ヤシ，コーヒー，カカオなど熱帯産品を買い付け，逆にヨーロッパ製工業製品を売りつけるという流通段階にとどまっていたが，そのような商業活動の中核をになったのが，この会社のような総合商社であった。
