Originally, spot means "physical goods" or "on-site," and refers to a market where physical goods are delivered at the same time as a contract is made to the futures market (futures trading). In general, in the trading of crude oil and petroleum products, spot refers to the immediate purchase, as distinguished from long-term contracts, and this market is called the spot market. New York and Rotterdam are major spot markets. The crude oil price determined here sensitively reflects the supply and demand state of oil, so it also has a large impact on price determination in the international oil market. The proportion of spot has increased rapidly since 1983, and the majority of crude oil sales by OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) are spot or linked to spot prices.

本来，スポットspotは〈現物〉〈現場〉などの意で，先物市場（先物取引）に対して契約と同時に現物の受渡しをする市場のこと。一般に原油，石油製品の取引で，長期契約と区別した当用買いをスポットといい，その市場をスポット市場と呼ぶ。ニューヨークやロッテルダムなどが大きなスポット市場となっている。ここで決定される原油価格が石油の需給状態を敏感に反映するため，国際石油市場における価格決定にも大きな影響をおよぼす。1983年以降にスポットの比率が急激に高まり，OPEC（石油輸出国機構）の原油販売の大部分がスポットかスポット価格に連動したものとなっている。
