The first military commander of the Western Han dynasty. His posthumous name was Wu Hou. He was from the same town as the Western Han's first Emperor, Liu Bang, in Pei (Jiangsu Province). He rose from poverty to join Liu Bang's army, and fought against the Qin army with distinction, becoming a hero who opened up the country. After Liu Bang ascended to the throne, he worked hard to put down the Han Wang Xin Rebellion and the Lü clan Rebellion, and was instrumental in supporting Emperor Wen. During Emperor Wen's reign, he was promoted from right prime minister to prime minister, and was given the fief of Jiang (Hou Ma Shi, Shanxi Province).
