In Europe, especially in medieval France and Germany, a feudal right in which the lord of a manor forced his subjects to use facilities he owned exclusively. It is translated as "prohibitive right." It is considered a type of feudal rent. The lord exclusively owned the facilities necessary for the daily life of his subjects, forced them to use them, and collected royalties. These facilities included bread ovens, flour mills (watermills), grape pressing facilities, wool fulling plants, dyeing facilities, and lumber mills, and the subjects were prohibited from owning these facilities. As the manor system declined, these facilities were often rented out to wealthy farmers.
