Born June 5, 1757, Louis Died May 5, 1808. Selancourt French philosopher and physician. One of the central figures of the School of Idealism. Specializing in medicine, he became a professor at the University of Paris in 1795. During the Revolution, he collaborated with H. Mirabeau on educational planning and was friends with E. Condillac. He gained fame for his major work, Treatise on the Body and Mind of Man (1802). He considered the mechanism of language essential to the mechanism of the intellect and the meaning of ideas, and is considered a precursor to logical positivism, but language also requires an analysis of the senses, which are the cause of ideas. The brain is the stomach that digests impressions, and the study of humans must be reduced to physics and physiology. He also asserted the existence of the unconscious, based on changes in the nervous system caused by memory and imagination. His philosophy, based on mechanistic explanations, is at the origin of positivism, which followed La Mettrie and continued from A. Comte to H. Taine.
