1327‐70 Egyptian writer. Born into the prestigious Subuki family of scholars. He moved to Damascus when his father was appointed Grand Qadi of Syria. Blessed with talent and an environment, he qualified as a fatwa (legal exhortation) and professor at a young age, and served as a scribe (khatib), preacher, professor, and qadi. He was a proponent of Islamic reform of the state, and he incurred the resentment of Ibn Taymiyya's school and the jealousy of his rivals. This led to him falling into misfortune for a time. His major works include the adult bibliographical dictionary "The Lives of the Shafi'i School" and "The Book for Warding Off Misfortune," which sets out reform norms for different classes and occupations.
