Nikko Reiheishi

Japanese:
Nikko Reiheishi

An Imperial envoy from the Imperial Court visited Nikko Toshogu Shrine every year to make an offering of offerings. At the request of the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, councilor Jimyoin Motosada was dispatched as a temporary offering envoy in 1646 (Shoho 3). He left Edo on April 13 and traveled to Mount Nikko, and on the 17th, he attended the Toshogu Shrine ceremony and made an offering. From the following year, an offering envoy (reiheishi) was dispatched from the Imperial Court every year to read the decree, and this continued until 1867 (Keio 3). This marked the reinstatement of the Ise Shrine offering envoys, which had been discontinued in 1647. The reiheishi left Kyoto at the end of March or on April 1 every year, arrived in Nikko by the 15th, made an offering before the altar on the 16th, the day before the great festival, and returned to Kyoto on the 30th. The group consisted of around 50 people, and travelled down the Nakasendo and Reiheishi Kaido roads on the way there, and returned to Kyoto via the Nikko Kaido, Edo and Tokaido roads on the way back.
