Subuta - Subuta

Japanese: スブタ - すぶた
Subuta - Subuta

An annual aquatic plant in the family Hormonaceae (APG classification: Hormonaceae). The leaves are soft, weak, basal, sessile, and linear-lanceolate. They are 10-30 cm long, a few millimeters wide, and have clearly serrated edges. From August to October, a flower stalk several centimeters long emerges from the leaf axil, with a single cylindrical sheath 3-5 cm long at the top, from which a single pale green bisexual flower emerges. Both the petals and sepals are linear and three-leaf. The seeds are elliptical, with warty protrusions scattered on the surface, and both ends are sharp like thorns. They grow in rice paddies and ditches, and are widely distributed in Japan west of Honshu, Asia, and Australia. In the Chukyo region, women's disheveled hair is called "subutagama," which is said to be an analogy to the way the leaves of the subuta plant flutter about in the water.
