Shantou

A prefecture-level city on the South China Sea in the eastern part of Guangdong Province, China. The name is in the Cantonese dialect. It is located at the western end of the Hanjiang Delta. When Chaozhou was opened to foreign trade by the Treaty of Tianjin in 1858, it became an open port in 1860 as its outer port, and has since developed as a port city. It was also known as a birthplace of overseas Chinese until the early 20th century. It has regular shipping routes to Singapore and Penang in Malaysia. In addition to agricultural processing such as canned goods, refined sugar, and tobacco, industries such as machinery, film, photographic paper, electronics, and shipbuilding have developed. It is also famous as the birthplace of Shantou embroidery. In 1980, it was designated a special economic zone to attract foreign capital, and export processing zones for electronics, plastics, furniture, etc. were established.

Across the sea of Guoshi, south of the city, there are famous places of interest such as Shantou Seaside Park, Peach Blossom Canal, and Shishiqu. Religious activities are thriving in the city, and by 2012, the city government had approved 446 religious facilities, with a total of over 100,000 believers. The Guangzhou-Meizhou-Shantou Line connects the city and Guangzhou. There are also air routes to various parts of the country as well as Hong Kong.
