A popular learning and cultural movement that aims to enable all people to read and write. The first literacy movement of the 20th century was carried out in the Soviet Union under the leadership of Lenin, and began in China during the War of Resistance against Japan. After World War II, along with national liberation and independence, the movement was carried out in many countries, including Cuba, Myanmar, Vietnam, Iraq, and Ethiopia. Historically and since the modern era, literacy rates in Japan have been high due to the development of school education, but behind the scenes, literacy education for the Burakumin, discriminated against in the past who have been forced to live in poverty under social discrimination, has been neglected. As part of the Buraku liberation movement, a literacy movement based on awareness of human rights has been developed since the 1960s, which has also influenced Dowa education in public education. → Related topics Literacy rate | Abbreviations Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
