excommunication

...mainly in Judaism and Christianity, the act of excluding believers from the church and imposing various punishments on them. In English, it is called excommunication, and its original meaning is literally "to cut off communication." Generally, there are "minor excommunication" and "major excommunication." Minor excommunication is a temporary measure for relief, but major excommunication means a prohibition on all communication with other believers and exclusion from the church not only in the present but also in the future.
