…Scarlatti left behind 600 harpsichord sonatas, which played a major role in establishing the foundations of piano playing, including double notes in thirds and sixths, a wide range of arpeggios, various ornaments, and crossing of the hands. In the pre-classical period, sonatas by Italians Domenico Alberti (c. 1710-c. 1740) and Baldassare Galuppi (1706-85), as well as the sonatas and concertos by J.S. Bach's sons, are important. Emanuel left behind about 250 pieces for the harpsichord and clavichord, and also wrote a two-part work, Essay on the Correct Method of Playing the Clavier (1753, 62), which marked an era in the history of performance theory. …

Starting with the Italian composer Francesco Araja (1709-70?), who had been in Russia for many years since 1735, leading Italian composers such as Baldassare Galuppi (1706-85), Tommaso Traetta (1727-79), Paisiello, Giuseppe Sarti (1729-1802), and Cimarosa stayed in St. Petersburg as the court conductor of Catherine the Great (reigned 1762-96).
