American sennou - American sennou

A perennial plant of the Caryophyllaceae family (APG classification: Caryophyllaceae). It is also called Cornflower. The stem is upright and grows to about 90 cm, the whole plant is covered with sparse hairs, and the leaves are opposite. The top of the stem is densely covered with five-petaled flowers, 2.5 cm in diameter, each with two lobes at the tip. It flowers from June to September and comes in red, white, and pink. It also has double flowers, and is cultivated for decorative purposes. This species is native to Asia Minor and Siberia, but the genus also includes the European species Suiboldii, the ancient Chinese species Senno, and the Japanese native species Matsumoto Senno, S. sieboldii (Van Houtte) H.Ohashi et H.Nakai ( L. sieboldii Van Houtte). It is best cultivated in fertile, sunny locations. It is propagated by seed or cuttings.

ナデシコ科（APG分類：ナデシコ科）の多年草。ヤグルマセンノウともいう。茎は直立し、約90センチメートルになり、全株は疎毛に覆われ、葉は対生する。茎頂に径2.5センチメートルで先端が二つに裂けた5弁花を頭状に密生する。花期は6～9月、花色は赤、白、桃。八重咲きもあり、観賞用に栽培される。本種は小アジア、シベリア原産であるが、この属にはヨーロッパ原産のスイセンノウ、古く中国から渡来したセンノウ、日本の自生種マツモトセンノウS. sieboldii (Van Houtte) H.Ohashi et H.Nakai（L. sieboldii Van Houtte）などがある。栽培は肥沃(ひよく)な日当りのよい場所に適す。繁殖は実生(みしょう)または挿芽による。
