An armed police force organized like an army and with military characteristics, but separate from the regular army. Usually under the jurisdiction of civilian authorities, its main duties are domestic security and anti-terrorism measures, but in times of war it may also support the military in combat operations. Typical examples are the police forces of Latin American countries under Spanish rule and the Philippines. As of 1981, Chile has a national armed police force, the Calabineros, of 27,000 personnel equipped with armored transport vehicles and aircraft, while Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Peru also have police and security forces of 3,000 to 20,000 personnel each.
