A derogatory term for journalism that sells scandal and sensationalism with the ultimate goal of increasing circulation and profits. It is roughly equivalent to the Japanese term "red newspapers." In the 1890s, Pulitzer's World, which had become a huge business, and Hearst's New York Journal were engaged in an extraordinary competition. The Sunday edition of the World had an eight-page cartoon section, four of which were printed in color. Richard F. Outcault's cartoon "The Yellow Kid" (originally titled "Hogan's Alley"), featuring a child dressed in yellow as the main character, was one of its attractions.
