…The word ecology was coined in 1895 by Miyoshi Manabu (1861-1939), professor at the Faculty of Science, University of Tokyo. Having just returned from studying in Germany that year and been appointed professor, Miyoshi wrote a pamphlet introducing European botany at the time, in which he stated that botany had four divisions: plant physiology, plant morphology, plant taxonomy, and plant ecology, and wrote that he coined the term shokunin ecology as a translation of Pflanzenbiologie. It is interesting to note that the original word here is Biologie. …
