A caldera lake in the Batak region of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. It is located in the Barisan Mountains and has an area of 1,300 km2 . The lake surface is 910m above sea level. Its deepest point is 529m, making it the eighth deepest in the world. The Asahan River flows out to the east and empties into the Straits of Malacca. The surrounding area is inhabited by the Batak people, and the lake was once considered sacred.
