Located in southwest Poland, 100 km west-southwest of Wroclaw, it is the capital of the province of the same name. Population 92,700 (1994). An old city dating back to 1288, it is an industrial city in the Lower Silesia region. Paper, textile, glass, and meat industries are based here. After World War II, it was incorporated into Poland. Its German name is Hirschberg. It is also a base for tourism and recreation in the Karkonosze Mountains (Karkonosze National Park) that form the border with Czechoslovakia.
