Japanese: 行快 - ぎょうかい

A Buddhist sculptor from the early Kamakura period. Dates of birth and death unknown. A disciple of Kaikei, he created the seated Shaka Nyorai statue, the principal image of Daiho'on-ji Temple in Kyoto, around 1221 (Jokyu 3). There is a record that he assisted Kaikei in the reconstruction of the Eleven-Headed Kannon statue at Hasedera Temple in 1219, and created the halo. In addition, one of the thousand Thousand-Armed Kannon statues at Rengeo-in Temple (Sanjusangendo), which were constructed between 1251 (Kencho 3) and 1266 (Bun'ei 3), bears his inscription, and Kaikei's influence can be seen, along with the statue at Daiho'on-ji Temple. 鎌倉時代前期の仏師。生没年不詳。快慶の弟子で，1221年(承久3)ころ京都大報恩寺の本尊釈迦如来座像を造る。1219年の長谷寺十一面観音像の再興造営には快慶を補佐して当たり，光背を造ったという記録がある。また，1251年(建長3)から66年(文永3)の間に造営された蓮華王院(三十三間堂)の千体千手観音の1体に彼の銘があり，大報恩寺像とともに快慶の影響が認められる。【佐藤昭夫】
