Spark chamber. A device for detecting the tracks of charged particles. A container filled with an inert gas such as argon is inserted between parallel metal plates spaced about 1 cm apart. If a short-duration high-voltage pulse is applied to the metal plates immediately after the charged particle passes, a discharge occurs only where the particle passes and ions are created. If multiple layers of these parallel plates are stacked, the tracks can be observed. It has the advantages of being inexpensive, being able to select only the desired reaction, and being able to input the discharge current directly into a computer for analysis. It was put into practical use in 1959 by Fukui Takatoki and Miyamoto Shigenori, but is rarely used today.

スパークチェンバー。荷電粒子の飛跡を検出する装置の一つ。間隔1cm程度の平行金属板の間に，アルゴンなどの不活性ガスを充てんした容器を挿入しておく。荷電粒子が通過した直後に金属板に持続時間の短い高電圧パルスをかけると，粒子が通過しイオンができたところだけ放電が起こる。この平行板を何層も重ねれば飛跡が観察できる。価格が安く，目的とする反応だけを選別でき，放電電流を直接コンピューターに入れ解析できるなどの長所がある。1959年福井崇時，宮本重徳が実用化したが，現在はほとんど使われていない。
