The capital of the United Mexican States. Population 8,483,623 (1995). The largest city in Latin America. Formerly Mexico City referred to the four central districts, but after a legal change in 1970, the federal district Distrito Federal and Mexico City became the same, with an area of 1,499 km2. It is located at the western edge of the Mexico Basin, which is 40 km east to west and 50 km north to south, and is surrounded by the Sierra de Guadalupe (highest peak 3,029 m) to the northwest, the Ajusco mountain range (3,940 m) to the west, and mountains of 3,000 m to the south. Although it lies between 19°03′ and 19°35′ north latitude, its altitude of 2,280 m means that it has an alpine climate, with an average annual temperature of 15.1°C (annual range 5.2°C).
