Schmidt telescope

Schmidt telescope
A telescope that combines a spherical concave mirror with a corrector plate with a special cross section. An astronomical camera that uses this optical system is called a Schmidt camera. In a normal reflecting telescope that uses a paraboloid of revolution, the field of view is extremely narrow due to coma aberration, and the aperture ratio cannot be made very large, but the Schmidt telescope eliminates these drawbacks and provides a wide field of view and a large aperture ratio. It was invented by B. Schmidt (1879-1935) of the Hamburg Observatory in 1930, and various improvements have been made since then. Large telescopes used for general astronomical observation (the largest in the world is at the Karl Schwarzschild Observatory in Germany, with an aperture of 134 cm) have a field of view diameter of 10° or more, and those for meteor observation can reach 20° to 50°, and those with an aperture of 50 cm and F/1 are used for satellite observation.
