A type of headgear worn by women. Currently, brides wear it at weddings, but originally it was worn by women of wealthy families in the Edo period, and was used to protect against dust when going out, like a hand towel, and was removed when indoors. It was actually made of kneaded silk, so it was also called a "neri" hat or "age" hat, and the front hair and the topknot at the back were fastened with a silver hat pin with a family crest. The traditional "tsunokakushi" hat was called a "tsunoboshi," a black hat worn by old women at the Hoonko ceremony, as a warning against women showing their horns. It was not until the Meiji period that the "age" hat came to be called "tsunokakushi," with the warning not to show their horns even after marriage. Although it has a completely different form, a hat in the shape of the traditional "tsunoboshi" hat is used at funerals in the Kakegawa area of Shizuoka Prefecture.
