Heliant - Heliant (English spelling)

Heliant - Heliant (English spelling)

This gospel of unknown authorship is said to be the first epic poem in German literature. It was written between 822 and 840. Heliant means "Savior". According to the Latin preface, it was written at the request of King Ludwig the Pious (778-840) for the edification of the Saxons. It is believed to have had a great influence on the Saxons. Written in Old Saxon using alliteration, this great work is based on the Gospel of Matthew and describes the life of Jesus, making use of contemporary commentaries. The heroic style is adapted to new subjects, the story is set in Germany, Jesus and his apostles are reminiscent of a Germanic lord and his loyal retainers, and the Sermon on the Mount is depicted as an image of a Germanic assembly. It is also a valuable resource for the Old Saxon language.
