Born: November 20, 1828, Mito [Died] November 10, 1894. Tokyo scholar of Japanese classics. Commonly known as Kozaburo, his pen name was Kohi, Mizuya or Kuwaen. He was a disciple of Motoori Naito. He was well known to Tokugawa Nariaki, but after his death he was confined for violating the taboo of Tokugawa's name. In 1872 (Meiji 5), he was called to the Ministry of Education and served as the chief priest of various shrines. In 1874, he became the deputy chief priest of the Ise Shrine and also served as the deputy junior chief priest, working to spread Shinto thought. In 1882, he became a lecturer at the University of Tokyo, and then taught Japanese literature and history as a professor at the First Higher School.
