Born: November 11, 1579. Baptized: Antwerp
Died August 10, 1657. Antwerp. Flemish still-life and animal painter. He studied under Bruegel II (son of Bruegel the Elder) and H. Baren. In 1608 he traveled to Italy, and after returning home he painted still lifes and animals on his canvases under Rubens. Later he became the chief painter to Archduke Albert, and painted several hunting scenes at the request of Philip III of Spain. Many of his works are in the Prado Museum.

フランドルの静物画家，動物画家。ブリューゲル2世 (大ブリューゲルの子) および H.バーレンに師事。 1608年イタリアに旅行，帰国後はルーベンスのもとで彼のキャンバスに静物や動物を描いた。後年執政官アルバート大公の首席画家となり，スペインのフェリペ3世の命を受けて幾点かの狩猟画を描いた。プラド美術館には彼の作品が多数収蔵されている。
