Boston Marathon

Japanese: ボストン･マラソン（英語表記）Boston Marathon

A marathon race held in Boston, USA. Officials of the Boston Athletic Association, who were inspired by the marathon race at the first modern Olympic Games held in Athens in 1896, held the first race on April 19, 1897, to commemorate Patriotic Day. Since it was canceled in 1918 due to the effects of World War I, it has been held every April (on the third Monday in recent years) without fail, and has already been held over 100 times. It is the oldest single race in the world. The course has been modified little by little, but currently it is a one-way course from Hopkinton, a suburb of Boston, to the Boston Public Library.

アメリカのボストン市で行われるマラソン･レース。1896年にアテネで開かれた近代オリンピック第1回大会のマラソン･レースを見て感激したボストン陸上協会の役員が翌97年4月19日，〈愛国記念日〉を記念して第1回大会を開いた。1918年に第1次世界大戦の影響で中止になったほかは毎年4月(近年は第3月曜日)に欠かさず行われ，すでに第100回を超えている。単独レースとしては世界最古。コースは少しずつ修正が行われているが，現在はボストン郊外のホプキントンからボストン市立図書館までの片道コース。
