A collection of essays by Ueda Akinari. Published in 1808 (Bunka 5). This collection of essays, which Akinari freely wrote about his thoughts in his final years, consists of 163 short essays, and in addition to the original handwritten version, several other copies have been handed down. All of Akinari's inner concerns are written in simple colloquial language, including his opinions on waka and haiku poetry, academic research, impressions on national history, theories on Confucianism and Buddhism, critiques of his friends and acquaintances, autobiographical recollections, and even worldly observations. It is an essential resource for getting to know Akinari as a person. The title is taken from the words of Sun Simiao in the "Recluse" section of the "Book of Tang," "The courage desires to be great, the heart desires to be small (careful)."
