Born: January 26, 1870, Perm
[Died] February 26, 1944. Paris. Russian economist, politician, and critic. Graduated from St. Petersburg University. In the 1890s, as an activist of legal Marxism, he edited many magazines, including Novoe slovo (New Words). His article Critical Notes on the Problems of the Economic Development of Russia (1894), which criticized the Narodniks, was criticized by VI Lenin as a bourgeois theory. He also drafted the founding manifesto of the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party in 1898, but later turned to criticize Marxism. In 1905, he was a member of the Central Committee of the Constitutional Democratic Party (Cadet), a professor at the St. Petersburg Higher Industrial Institute from 1907 to 1917, and a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences from 1917. After the October Revolution, he joined the counter-revolutionary government, then went into exile in Prague and then Paris. His other major works include Khozyaistvo i tsena (1913-16) (Economics and Prices).

ロシアの経済学者，政治家，評論家。ペテルブルグ大学卒業。 1890年代の合法マルクス主義の活動家として『新しい言葉』 Novoe slovoなど多くの雑誌を編集，ナロードニキを批判した論文『ロシアの経済的発展に関する問題の批判的覚え書』 Kriticheskie zametki k voprosu ob ekonomicheskom razvitii Rossii (1894) はブルジョア的理論として V.I.レーニンの批判の対象となった。また 1898年ロシア社会民主労働党の創立宣言を起草したが，その後マルクス主義の批判者に転じ，1905年立憲民主党 (カデット) 創立に際し中央委員，07～17年ペテルブルグ高等工業学院教授，17年以降ロシア科学アカデミー会員。十月革命後は反革命政府に参加したのちプラハ，さらにパリへ亡命。主著にはほかに『経済と価格』 Khozyaistvo i tsena (1913～16) がある。
