Provencal literature - Provencal literature

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire (476), the linguistic unity of Gaul (today's France) was lost due to the invasion of Germanic tribes, and from about the 8th century, a Southern French language (Occitan) that was quite different from Northern French (Oière) emerged in the area south of the Loire River. Literature written in this Southern French language is generally called Provencal literature. It is not necessarily appropriate to call this literature Provencal literature after the name of a region in southeastern France. This is because in the mid-19th century, a movement to revive southern French literature (Felibrige) was launched by the Provencal poet Mistral and others, and this movement played a major role in the renewal and rise of language and literature throughout southern France.

西ローマ帝国の滅亡(476)後，ガリア地方(今日のフランス)はゲルマン民族の侵入によって言語的統一が失われ，ほぼ8世紀ころから，ロアール川以南の地には，北仏語(オイル語)とかなり相違した南仏語(オック語)が発生した。この南仏語で書かれた文学を総称して，一般にプロバンス文学という。このようにフランス南東部の一地方名を冠して，この文学をプロバンス文学と呼称するのは必ずしも妥当ではない。これは，19世紀中葉，プロバンスの詩人ミストラルらによって南仏文学復興運動〈フェリブリージュ〉が興され，この運動が南仏全域の言語･文学の刷新･興隆に大きな役割を果たしたためである。
