[Died] February 6, 1972, Urbana, Illinois, USA American cultural anthropologist. His theories of cultural evolution and new world civilizations had a major impact on the academic world (→ neo-evolutionism). He claimed that his series of comparative studies of cultural change revealed patterns in cultural change, and proved their validity. He was professor at Columbia University (1946-52) and Illinois University (52-69). His major works include Theory of Culture Change: The Methodology of Multilinear Evolution (55), Irrigation civilization (55), and Contemporary Change in Traditional Societies (3 volumes, 67).
