多毛綱サシバゴカイ目ゴカイ科Nereidaeに属する環形動物の総称，またはそのうちの1種を指す（イラスト）。世界中に広く分布し約450種が知られ，日本ではイソゴカイ，イトメ，ジャムシ，ゴカイ，フツウゴカイ，クマドリゴカイ，ウチワゴカイ，エゾゴカイ，アシナガゴカイなど40種以上が知られている。ふつう海岸の石の下や，砂利の中，海藻の根部の間など水深20mくらいまでに生息していて，深海にはほとんど見られない。
