The Kiel Canal, also known as the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal, is a 98.7 km long canal that connects Brunsbüttel at the base of the Jutland Peninsula with Kiel-Holtenau. It connects the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, and is one of the world's largest canals for ocean-going ships. A small-scale predecessor to this canal was already built between 1777 and 1784. Construction of the current canal began in 1887 and was completed in 1895. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
