A type of guitar used in popular music (illustration). It is placed horizontally, with a steel bar held in the left hand pressing down on the strings, and is played with a pick in the right hand. It is a typical slide guitar, and is also called the Hawaiian guitar because of its origins in Hawaii. The name steel guitar comes from the bar held in the left hand. It is said to have been invented by either Hawaiian Joseph Kekuku, James Hoa, or Gabriel Davion around the 1880s, and was used by placing an adapter on the upper bridge of a normal Spanish guitar, raising the strings above the fingerboard.
