Born on July 10, 1662. The second son of Ikeda Mitsumasa, the lord of Okayama Domain in Bizen. He was granted 25,000 koku of new land by his elder brother, Ikeda Tsunamasa, the lord of Okayama Domain, and in 1669 he became the first head of the Ikeda family to rule the Okayama Shinden Domain in Bitchu (Kamogata).
