Kannonji Temple

Japanese: 観音寺 - かんのんじ
Kannonji Temple
This temple belongs to the Daikakuji school of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, and is located in Kotohiki Park, a nationally designated place of scenic beauty, on the slopes of Mt. Kotohiki in Kannonji City, Kagawa Prefecture. It is also known as Kannonji or Shippo-san Jinne-in Kannon Temple. It was founded in the Nara period as a branch temple of Kotohiki Hachiman Shrine (located at the summit of Mt. Kotohiki), and in 807 Kukai built the Chukon-do Hall and enshrined a self-carved Kannon statue as the principal image. He also built the Saikon-do Hall and Tokon-do Hall. The current principal images are Shokannon, Shaka Nyorai, and Yakushi Nyorai. It is the 69th temple of the 88 Shikoku Temples. Jin'ei-in Temple (a combination of the temple separated from Kotohiki Hachiman-gu Shrine during the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the Meiji era), which enshrines the local Buddha of Kotohiki Hachiman-gu Shrine, is the 68th temple on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. There are two temples on one mountain, and the temple town developed with the popularity of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. The Chukon-do Hall, which was rebuilt in 1525, the Kotohiki Shrine legend painting, and the wooden reclining Buddha statue are designated as important cultural properties.
