An illustrated encyclopedia from the Edo period. Edited by Terajima Ryoan in 1712, it was published by Osaka Kyorindo. It has 105 volumes and 81 books. It is divided into 96 categories, from astronomy and human ethics to plants, and contains Japanese and Chinese subjects. Each subject is explained in simple Chinese and has a simple explanation and illustration. The author traveled widely around the country to survey each subject, and provides objective and rational explanations, clearly stating the type, manufacturing method, use, medicinal effects, etc., and the illustrations are analytical. However, in the case of shrines and temples, the author writes in the legend that he prioritized auspicious origins over history, and that nobles and court nobles had no choice but to record the information as it was passed down. Due to its clarity and accuracy, it was widely used for about 200 years after its publication, right up until the Meiji period. The editor, Ryoan, was a doctor in Osaka and a senior disciple of Hokkyo Wake Chuan. He recorded the book in accordance with his teacher's teaching that "knowing heaven, earth and man will help you put medical science to good use," and based it on the format of the 106-volume Sansai Tuhui (Sancai Illustrated Guide) by Wang Qi of the Ming Dynasty.
