A man of letters from the late Edo period. Born in Shiozawa, Echigo (Minamiuonuma City, Niigata Prefecture). His childhood name was Yataro, and he changed his name to Gisoji when he came of age at the age of 16. Makino was his haiku name. His family was a merchant of chijimi (crepe silk), but Makino was fond of calligraphy and painting from an early age and is said to have shown extraordinary talent. He also trained hard to take over the family business, and by the age of 16 or 17, he had acquired all the knowledge necessary for a merchant. At the age of 19, he went to Edo for the first time to sell chijimi, but he studied calligraphy on the side. At the age of 20, he took over the family business and worked hard to make it prosper, but he soon began to find time in his busy schedule to study the climate of Echigo. His representative works are "Hokuetsu Seppu" and "Akiyama Kikō". He had a wide circle of friends, including Santou Kyoden, Takizawa Bakin (Kyokutei Bakin), and Jippensha Ikku. In 1989, the Suzuki Makino Memorial Museum was opened in Shiozawa, Makino's hometown, and related materials are open to the public.
