An evergreen small shrub of the family Rhododendron (APG classification: Ericaceae). There are six species in the genus Rhododendron, distributed in the high mountains and cold zones of the Northern Hemisphere, the Andes Mountains of South America, the Falkland Islands, etc. The stems are long and creeping, branching well, and the branches are erect to a height of 10-20 cm, forming large colonies. The leaves are leathery, numerous, alternate, linear, small, 4-6 mm long, with recurved edges. Dioecious. Small purple-black flowers bloom in the leaf axils in June, with three petals and three sepals. Male flowers have three stamens, and female flowers have one pistil. The fruit is a spherical drupe 6-10 mm in diameter that ripens purple-black around September and has a sweet-sour taste that can be eaten or used to make jam or fruit wine. It commonly grows in the alpine zones of Honshu north of the Chubu region and Hokkaido, and is also distributed from the Kuril Islands to Kamchatka, the Korean Peninsula, northeastern China, and eastern Siberia.

ガンコウラン科（APG分類：ツツジ科）の常緑小低木。ガンコウラン属には6種あり、北半球の高山や寒帯および南アメリカのアンデス山脈、フォークランド諸島などに分布する。茎は長く地をはい、よく分枝し、枝は立って高さ10～20センチメートルになり、大きな群落をつくる。葉は革質、多数で互生し、線形、長さ4～6ミリメートルと小さく、縁(へり)が反り返る。雌雄異株。6月に紫黒色の小さい花が葉腋(ようえき)に開き、花弁と萼片(がくへん)は3枚ずつある。雄花には雄しべが3本、雌花には雌しべが1本。果実は球形、径6～10ミリメートルの核果で、9月ごろ紫黒色に熟し、甘酸っぱい味で食べられ、ジャムや果実酒をつくる。中部地方以北の本州、北海道の高山帯に普通に生え、千島からカムチャツカ、朝鮮半島、中国東北部、東シベリアにも分布する。
