An English work by Okakura Tenshin. Published by John Murray Books, London, in 1903. A representative work by Tenshin that traces the history of Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, and other religions, emphasizes the greatness of the Oriental spirit that gave birth to them, and argues that Japanese art has well preserved that spirit. The opening line, "Asia is one," is well known, and the work is filled with Tenshin's grand Asianism, but this nationalism was later used to propagate fascism. [Harada Minoru]
