Hirokata Yashiro

Japanese: 屋代弘賢 - やしろひろかた
Hirokata Yashiro

A scholar of Japanese classics in the late Edo period. Son of Yashiro Yoshifusa, a Shogunate official under Kanda Myojin Shrine in Edo. Commonly known as Taro. His pen name was Wakiike. In addition to assisting in the editing of Hanawa Hokiichi's Gunsho Ruiju and Shibano Ritsuzan's Kuni Kagami, he also wrote Kokon Yoranko at the Shogunate's command, and was involved in the editing of Kansei Choshu Shokafu and other works. Known for his extensive knowledge. He was also active as a calligrapher, transcribing the Shogunate's response to Russia. Died on the 18th of leap year, the 12th year of Tenpo (reported to the government on February 25th, the 4th year of Kaei). His grave still stands at Myosei-ji Temple in Hakusan, Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo. Many of his works are still in manuscript form and are kept in the National Diet Library, Seikado Bunko, Toyo Bunko, National Archives of Japan, Mukyokai Library, etc. After his death, most of his Shinobazu Bunko collection was kept in the Awa Province Library of the Tokushima Domain, but was destroyed by fire in 1950.

Japanese:

江戸後期の国学者。江戸・神田(かんだ)明神下の幕臣屋代佳房(よしふさ)の子。通称大郎(たろう)。号は輪池。塙保己一(はなわほきいち)の『群書類従』、柴野栗山(しばのりつざん)の『国鑑(くにかがみ)』の編集に協力したほか、幕命により『古今(ここん)要覧稿』を著し、また『寛政重修(かんせいちょうしゅう)諸家譜』などの編集にも従事した。該博な学識で知られる。ロシアへの幕府の返書を清書するなど、書家としても活躍した。天保(てんぽう)12年閏(うるう)正月18日没(嘉永(かえい)4年2月25日公儀に届出)。墓は東京都文京区白山(はくさん)の妙清寺に現存。多数の著作は、稿本のまま、国立国会図書館、静嘉堂(せいかどう)文庫、東洋文庫、国立公文書館、無窮会図書館などに伝わる。蔵書不忍(しのばず)文庫の多くは、死後、徳島藩阿波(あわ)国文庫に収められたが、1950年の火災により焼失した。
