It is the capital of the province of Overijssel in central Holland. It has a population of 107,373 (2001). Located on the Zwarte Water River, it developed as a commercial city as it is a junction of canals, railways and highways. Large fish and cattle markets are also held here. Industries such as textiles and food are also thriving. The town's origins date back to the 11th century, and it became an autonomous city in 1233, and has grown into a trading centre since the 16th century. Remains of the city include a star-shaped moat, city walls and city gates, as well as a Gothic cathedral and a 15th-century town hall. In the suburb of Agnietenberg there is an Augustinian monastery where the monk Thomas à Kempis lived from 1407 to 1471.
