The Book of Amos

This book, named after Amos, is the third of the Minor Prophets, a division of the Old Testament prophecies, and consists of nine chapters. Chapters 1 to 6 are a collection of prophecies of judgment directed at Israel and the surrounding nations, while chapters 7 to 9 are centered on Amos's recollections of five visions and prophetic activities that may have internally prepared him for his vocation. It stands out among the prophecies in that it describes God's determined judgment and its misery in concise, powerful terms mediated by the imagination, without any fatalism.

旧約聖書の預言書の一区分である〈小預言書〉の3番目に，アモスの名を冠して置かれた書物で，9章より成る。1～6章は，イスラエルおよび周辺諸民族に向けられた審判預言を集めており，7～9章はアモスの召命を内的に準備したであろう五つの幻と預言活動に関する回想を中心に編まれている。神が決意した審判とその悲惨を，想像力に媒介された簡潔で力強い表現を用いて，宿命論を排しつつ叙述する点に特色があり，預言書のなかでも異彩を放っている。
