Swansea - Swansea (English spelling)

A port city in southern Wales, UK, facing the Bristol Channel. Population: 223,293 (2001). It developed as a market town from the Middle Ages onwards, and after the Industrial Revolution, the metallurgical industry, dependent on Welsh anthracite, flourished. Blessed with a good harbour, it imports ore, crude oil, timber, etc., and mainly exports coal. Tinplate manufacturing accounts for the majority of national production, and various metal industries are also thriving. It is also known as a coastal resort, and the city is home to the ruins of a Norman castle, the 15th century St. Mary's Church, and Swansea University.
